Router Problems

There are a number of problems that could cause your router to act up, including the following:

Extremely Slow

Your router, and therefore your online connection, is unbelievably slow and you cannot get any work done. This could be caused by a few different things, one of which is possibly because other devices (microwaves, cordless phones, garage door openers, baby monitors and more) are operating on the same frequency as your router (2.5 GHz band). If you have recently added a device to your household or business environment, this could be causing your router to operate less effectively. You can change the channel that your router is using through the browser-based preferences interface, and this can help alleviate poor connectivity.

Outdated Firmware

Sometimes, your router’s firmware may be outdated, which can cause problems, including a poor connection. Router manufacturers upgrade their firmware occasionally, and you should make sure you have the latest version on your router. To do this, you can download the newest firmware from the router manufacturer’s website. Once downloaded on your PC, you can go into the router’s setup through the browser-based interface. After you login to the setup utility, simply locate the firmware upgrade section and follow the instructions. Every router setup interface is different, so reference your user manual.

You Are Locked Out

What happens when you lose your password and you are unable to access your router preferences? Don’t worry, it’s not as bad as you might think. If you’ve come to the point in the road where you need to access router settings, you can easily reset the device to its original factory settings. The majority of routers have a reset button on the back of the case. By inserting a safety pin tip or unbent small paper clip, you can revert all router settings back to their defaults. This will grant you access to your router’s preferences, but remember that you’ll have to adjust any settings that you were using before the reset.

Dead Spots in Your Home or Office

If you’re already using an 802.11n router and adapter, you can probably disregard this one. With 802.11g routers, you can run into situations where it cannot effectively reach certain areas of your home or office, often times because the data stream has been bounced off of too many walls, floors or other obstructions. If you’re experiencing dead zones that you need to get rid of, it is time to switch to an 802.11n router and adapter. Another potential solution to this problem is to have a multi-router installation, where you have more than one router installed on your network.

Poor or No WiFi Signal

If you have a computer setup far away form your modem and router, you may not be able to get a WiFi signal. The best solution to this problem is obviously to run a CAT 5 ethernet cable from your router to your “distant” machine, as wired networks are far superior to wireless ones. In some cases, this is not possible and you must rely on other means for connectivity. You could use a pair of powerline adapters, which uses existing electrical lines as if they were CAT 5 ethernet cables. Simply plug one into an AC wall outlet near your computer, and another one near your router.

Router Troubleshooting & Replacement

If you’re experiencing connectivity problems, we’ll come and inspect your network. Once we determine the problem, we’ll take steps to implement the proper solution. In some cases, your problem could have to do with your router. If this is the case, we’ll troubleshoot the issue, and help you get back online.

Multi-Router Scenarios

With larger computer networks, sometimes the best approach is to use multiple routers in your setup. By connecting one router to another, you’re effectively expanding the connectivity range of your network. One router is setup as the gateway to the internet, and the other routers are connected and used to route traffic through the gateway. At Super Software, we have designed and installed all kinds of networks, and know how to setup any network and properly configure it for optimal performance.

Port Forwarding

By default, the firewall of most routers block connection attempts by devices on the internet to those in your network. One way around this is to use port forwarding, which is also known as inbound firewall rules. Basically, port forwarding rules that inspect the header of each inbound packet, and either block the connection or forward it to specified devices on your local network. It can do this based on IP address, destination TCP port number and other inbound packet characteristics. At Super Software, we will assess your needs, and implement the best possible solution. If you need port forwarding, we will set it up for you.

Advanced Content Filtering

Do you need to filter content at your home or office to prevent access to certain websites? We can configure your router to make sure that only websites you approve of can be accessed. This is especially helpful for parents who want to make sure that their children only have access to approved sites and for office managers to prevent employees from browsing social media or other sites that could hinder their productivity.

Site-to-Site Virtual Private Networks (VPN)

Do you have multiple office branches, and need them to be connected to each other securely over a public network such as the internet. Site-to-site VPN effectively extends your company’s network, making resources from one branch available to people at another branch. This is especially helpful if employees from multiple offices need access to all the files and folders on your computer network. At Super Software, we have setup countless Site-to-Site Virtual Private Networks, and can get yours up and running in no time.

DD-WRT Routers

DD-WRT is a specific Linux-based firmware for wireless routers. It was originally created for the Linksys WRT54G series, and is a third-party firmware project which was designed to replace manufacturers’ firmware with custom firmware offering additional features and functionality. Using DD-WRT, you can greatly improve your router’s performance, boosting your wireless signal and even preventing bandwidth hogging and network overloads. Most newer routers support DD-WRT firmware, and it is definitely worth using. We have installed DD-WRT on numerous client routers, and the improved performance they experience is amazing.

WiFi Security and Security Audits

In business, security should be a main priority, and it’s important that you maintain high security standards for your computer network and all internal communications. We will help you implement the latest and greatest security measures on your wired/wireless routers to ensure that your information is totally safe. In addition, we will setup an effective backup solution so that you have an up-to-date copy of all your important data.

Mesh/Multi-Access Point WiFi Configurations

A wireless mesh network (WMN) is a network consisting of radio nodes organized in a mesh topology, and also a form of wireless ad hoc network. It can include laptops and desktops, cellular phones and other wireless devices. Mesh routers forward traffic to and from the gateways which can be connected to the internet (but don’t have to be). The radio nodes work in harmony with each other to effectively create a radio network, which is reliable and offers redundancy. When a single node cannot operate, the rest of the nodes still communicate with one another through intermediate nodes.
